Phishing Scams

Protect Yourself From Scam Artists & Hackers

Definition

Phishing is the most prevalent social engineering strategy used by fraudsters and hackers to steal personal information. They will send out emails to recipients purporting to come from a reliable source. The email will typically prompt for your information to be updated or validated through a hyperlink or icon. Once clicked on, the link will launch a fake website that has the same look and feel as the legitimate website. The information requested is usually personal information and could include usernames and passwords for banking platforms or email accounts as well as cell phone numbers and bank card details. Any information that is entered on the fake website is captured by the fraudsters or hackers and can be used to perpetrate fraud.

Example

You receive an attachment in an email that looks like it came from your bank. The message usually states that it is urgent that you fill in your details. The hackers on the receiving end have now gained your important information and are able to use this to carry out fraudulent actions that are to your detriment.

Millions of emails are sent and received on a daily basis. Some email servers are able to filter out the spam from the legitimate emails, but this does not always happen. If you are a new email user or not familiar with identifying the ‘good’ from the ‘bad’ emails, then it is unfortunately easy to become a victim of phishing. There are many criminals looking to “phish” around for a good catch ie they can fool you into supplying your personal details to them.
